The typical tourist attraction in Waterford is the House of Waterford Crystal. Now I am sure this may be exciting for some, but if you want to get out and experience the Irish countryside, breathe in the fresh country air and try something a little bit different then you need to do what we did and ride the Waterford Greenway Trail!
The Greenway trail is an old railway track that has been converted into 46 km of bike riding or hiking fun. You can hire bikes at the beginning, middle and end of the trail and ride as far as you like.
We started at Dungarvan and peddled our little hearts out all the way to the Coach House Cafe at Kilmacthomas. This was about halfway so of course, we had to stop and have a coffee and some lunch!
This is a great way to get out and see the beautiful Irish countryside and coastline, you get to see castles, waterfalls, bridges, tunnels, viaducts and medieval ruins along the way.
The great news is that if you don’t have time to complete the whole 46 km and you booked your bike through the Greenway Bike company then their shuttle bus will take you back to where you started.
Now I hadn’t ridden a bike for a few years but ironically after let us say 1 km (which may have actually been 10km) it was just like that old saying “it’s just like riding a bike”!
Good To Know
Pre-book your bike online with Waterford Greenway Bike Hire, especially if you want to book an electric bike as these are very popular
If you only have enough time to ride part of the trail, ride to the coach house, grab a coffee and the bus will take you back to town
If you are catching the bus back make sure you book your seat on the bus as soon as you arrive at the pickup point, this just saves having to wait if there are a few people with the same plan!
